2005年の春から、札幌で政治思想史を学んでいます。日本における政治学・政治思想の展開を、一国史としてではなく、同時代のより広い思想史的文脈のなかで捉えることが課題です。
大学の授業では、50年後、100年後の日本の政治文化にむけて、100年前、また200年前の政治思想の経験から、いま何を学びとることができるかを考えています。1890年代から第一次世界大戦までの「第一のグローバル化」が生んだ「社会問題」に対しては、広義の社会民主主義 Social Democracyが一つの解決策を提示しました。もはや不可避な現代世界の「グローバリゼーション」とそこから派生する日本社会の諸問題に、私たちは何をもってどのように応えられるでしょうか。20世紀の「全体主義の時代経験」から、思想的な遺産としてなにを学び得るでしょうか。世界の宗教運動と世俗化の新たな展開のなかで、東アジアや日本の経験は何を示唆するでしょうか。政治学における科学と合理性の追究は、従来の議論に新たになにを加え、また逆にどのような問題を残したのでしょうか。日本の政治思想を、その接点をもとに時間(過去)と空間(異なる政治文化)の比較軸のなかにおいて学ぶことは、現在の私たちの立ち位置を確認する上で役立ち、洋の東西を問わず近代の古典的な問いが今なお政治社会の直面する課題であると教えます。

MAKABE Jin is an associate professor of Political Thought in the Graduate School of Public Policy at Hokkaido University, where he has taught history of Japanese political thought since 2005. He works on the Japanese cultural, social, and intellectual history from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. He is now studying Chinese dynastic legitimacy in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Japan, examining the political backdrop and intellectual transformations that took place during the late Ming and early Qing periods. His recent work explores Japanese social democracy in the early twentieth century, with a focus on the colonial policies of Christian scholars at Imperial universities.
Makabe is the author of Politics and Academia in Late Tokugawa Japan: Shoheizaka Confucians and Diplomatic Transformation (Nagoya University Press, 2007) and co-author of History of Political Thought on Peace (Oufu, 2009), both written in Japanese. In 2008, Politics and Academia won the Tokugawa Prize, awarded by the Tokugawa Memorial Foundation for the best academic book on early-modern Japanese history, and is the winner of the 30th Kadokawa Genyoshi Award, by the Kadokawa Culture Promotion Foundation, for the best work on Japanese history in 2007.
Makabe received a Ph.D. and an M.A. from Tokyo Metropolitan University in the History of Political Thought, and a B.A. from International Christian University in Political Science. He was a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute in 2007-2009. |
